Winners of the Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Stories have emerged at the 2022 development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) awards held in Abuja.
Four journalists emerged winners in the competition organised by the development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) and sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation after holding a training programme for selected journalists.
Winners from the print, online, and broadcast categories received cash prizes and certificates of award.
Tina Abeku of The Guardian Newspapers emerged first with her story; “Knocks over poor access to Nigeria’s N154bn” and received ₦200,000 cash prize and a Certificate of Award.
Grace Obike of The Nation Newspapers came second with her story, “Ogbonge women lending to transform women’s lives” and received ₦150,000 cash prize and a Certificate of Award.
Victoria Onehi of 120 Edge News took the third place with her story, “N220bn MSME appraising disbursement based on CBN’s gender ratios” and received a cash prize of ₦100,000.
The only entry from the Broadcast category by Temitope Mustapha of Voice Of Nigeria got the first position with a cash prize of ₦150,000 with her story, “What a man can do a woman can do better.”
According to Hassan A. Karofi, The Director, dRPC Communications and Partnerships, the Centre came up with the competition to serve as a form of encouragement to more journalists reporting on gender issues to bring matters of Women’s Economic Empowerment to the fore.
Presenting the awards to them, the National President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Ladi Bala, represented by Glory Ohagwu of Voice of Nigeria, said the awardees had put in their best to come up with the reports.
She urged them to keep doing more investigative Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) stories to help in the liberation of women from poverty in the long-run.
