Winners have emerged at the 2021 PwC Media Excellence Awards.
The PwC Media Excellence Awards celebrates and rewards excellence in business reporting in Nigeria. The competition is open to professional journalists on a full time employment or freelancers, working in Nigeria, who have produced a story that falls within the categories covered by the award and that is available on a platform whose primary audience is Nigeria.
Winners Of 2021 PwC Media Excellence Awards
- The PwC Journalist of the year for Tax and Fiscal Policy Reporting Category: Odinaka Anudu (of the International Center for Investigative Reporting – ICIR) for the entry; “Money for the boys: How agberos pocket billions of Lagos transport revenue”, which exposed how non-state actors fleece Nigeria’s richest state of billions accruing from transport taxes.
- The PwC Journalist of the year for SMEs Reporting Category: Afeez Hanafi (of the Punch Newspaper) for the entry; “Odo-Owa: Kwara community where widowed black soap makers raise children with meagre proceeds”, which revealed how the Kwara rural women were pushing the limits set by poor capital, financial exclusion and unfriendly microfinance loan to eke out a living amid worsening economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The PwC Journalist of the year for Finance and Capital Markets Reporting Category: Nkiruka Nnorom (of Vanguard Newspaper).
- The PwC Journalist of the year for Business and Economy Reporting Category: Nicholas Ibekwe (of Premium Times).
The Head Judge of the competition, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, who is the Partner, Head of Tax and Regulatory Services at PwC, said 188 entries were received for this year’s edition, noting that the quality of the entries kept increasing yearly.
He said winners would receive plaques, certificates and cash gifts while runners-up and authors of 20 recognised entries would receive cash gifts.
