The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has emerged the overall winner of the 2020 Chartered Financial Analyst Society of Nigeria, CFA Institute Research Challenge.
At an event hosted at the Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos, UNILAG as the champion and Team OAU will now represent Nigeria at the Europe, Middle-east and Africa (EMEA) regional finals in the Kingdom of Jordan.
The students of University of Lagos (UNILAG) team include:
- Folasade Akinbowale (Department of Finance)
- Timileyin Idowu (Department of Economics)
- Ataranshe Oluwaseyi (Department of Accounting)
- John Oyadougha (Department of Finance)
- Nkechi Okochi (Department of Accounting)
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State clinched the first runner-up position in the competition, while University of Ibadan took the second runner-up position.
On January 31, 2020, the above students, led by Dr. Peter Amah, a Lecturer at the Department of Finance, UNILAG, participating in the 2019/2020 edition of the CFA Institute Annual Research Challenge with 11 other schools, emerged victorious.
The competition was entered by 24 schools, out of which 12 made it to the national finals, with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and University of Ibadan (UI) coming second (2nd) and third (3rd) place respectively.
Other universities that participated in the Challenge include: Bingham University; Bowen University; Nile University of Nigeria; University of Ilorin; Federal University of Technology, Akure; University of Maiduguri; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Covenant University; University of Abuja.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis and professional ethics. Participating students were tested on their analytical, valuation, report writing, and presentation skills. In the course of participating in this challenge, they gained real-world experience as they assumed the role of research analysts. It was based on their performances and the reports they submitted that 12 out of the 24 universities advanced to the National finals in Lagos, where they presented their reports to a panel of judges.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin, T. Ogundipe, FAS, congratulated the UNILAG Team members for their achievements and congratulated the University for winning the Research Challenge for the second time in a row.
The President of the CFA Society Nigeria Mr. Banji Fehintola said the Institute was committed to building future professionals in the country, by investing in the challenge. He was of the view that the growth and development of the Nigerian capital and financial market hinged on people who had requisite skills to move it forward.
The CFA Nigeria Institute 2020 Research Challenge gives students the opportunity to access mentors in financial analysis and professional ethics and also get trained intensively.
It featured report writing, presentation skills, valuation and analytical skills as some of what the participating students were evaluated upon.
