Team Nigeria has emerged winner of 12 medals (6 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 2 bronze medals) at the 2023 African Wrestling Championship held in Hammamet, Tunisia.
The medal winners at the 2023 African Wrestling Championship include Olympic medallist Blessing Oborodudu who won gold to becomes 12-time African champion.
While Oborududu was celebrating record gold crown, her counterpart Mercy Genesis clinched gold medal in the 50kg.
Christianah Ogunsanya of Nigeria defeated Cote d’Ivoire’s Nogona Bakayoko 11-0 while Adegoke Jumoke added to the gold list for team Nigeria in the 55kg.
Similarly, in the 57kg final, Hammami Faten of Tunisia lost to Adekuoroye Mercy of Nigeria 11-0, coupled with Biogos Ebi 5-0 victory over Egyptian Vadran Menatalia in the 72kg.
In the 59kg final, Patience Opuene of Nigeria lost 3-8 to Bousseta Siwar of Tunisia to end up with a silver medal, while Kolawale Esther settled for silver medal after falling 7-1 to Marwa Amri of Tunisia in the 62kg.
In addition, Hannah Reuben added more silver to team Nigeria on the day after losing 2-4 to Hamza Samir of Egypt in the 76kg finals, Ebipatei Moghenbofa made it four silver for team Nigeria in the 65kg on day three.
With the victory, Nigeria retained its team title in female wrestling, to become 12-time African female wrestling champions.
