TALKAM App Wins 2024 United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Award

TALKAM App has been awarded the 2024 United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Award presented at the UNAOC’s intercultural innovation hub held in Cascais, Portugal, on November 26, 2024.

TALKAM App is an anti-human-trafficking mobile application built by Devatop Centre for Africa Development, a Nigeria-based human rights advocacy centre.

The app, TALKAM, is used for reporting abuses, tracking the progress of reported cases, taking online human rights courses, social networking, and documenting other trafficking-related concerns.

Between 2019 and 2023, the TALKAM app has been used to report more than 250 cases from various African countries, comprising Niger Republic, Mali, and Libya, and outside the continent, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Devatop said the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has resolved over 50 cases through the app.

NAPTIP held a mini congratulatory event for the app’s UN award win at its headquarters in Abuja.

Binta Bello, the director general (DG) of NAPTIP, said Devatop Center for Africa Development has strongly collaborated with the agency in the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.

Bello, represented by Festus Gav, the assistant director of research and development, said the app has helped the agency to promptly attend to human trafficking incidents and praised the developers for the idea.

In her words:

“It is no surprise that this great idea is getting the desired attention and accolades it deserves from across the globe.

It is an affirmation of Nigeria’s determination to end human trafficking and all forms of human rights abuses, and for this I congratulate Devatop and its executive director, Joseph Osigwe.”

Osigwe thanked the NAPTIP DG for her support and commitment to end human trafficking in Nigeria.
