Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu of the Arabic Department, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto and Shaykh Bello Oke-Are from Ibadan, Oyo state have received Fellow of Arabic Studies in Nigeria (FASIN) Awards.
The FASIN award was given to them by the Academic Society for Arabic Language and Literature in Nigeria (ASALLIN) at the opening session of its 13th National Conference held at the Sokoto State University, Sokoto. The fellows were awarded with respect to their intellectual contributions to the development of Arabic Language and Literature in Nigeria.
The Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar who was represented by Chiroman Sokoto, Alhaji Buhari Abubakar commended the association for its efforts in promoting the study of Arabic in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor Sokoto State University, Professor Sani Dangoggo urged teachers of Arabic language to be bilingual, and not to concentrate on Arabic alone.
ASALLIN president, Dr. Muhammad Umar Ndagi urged the federal government to add Arabic to the existing academic programmes of the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano. Ndagi also called for the inclusion of ASALLIN in the membership of the Governing Council of Nigeria Arabic Language Village, Ngala, Borno state.
Dr. Muhammad Umar Ndagi also stressed that the association was making necessary efforts at finding solutions to challenges inhibiting progress of Arabic language in Nigeria.
The occasion also witnessed launching of the ASALLIN Journal, Al-Lisan, by the Chief Judge of Sokoto state, Hon. Justice Bello Abbas, who was represented by Justice Abubakar Muazu Lamido, a High Court Judge.
