The Platform Schools emerged winners of the NNPC-SNEPCo, and Chess in Slums Africa, Lagos State Schools Chess Championship.
The tournament, which was powered by NNPC-SNEPCo in partnership with Chess in Slums Africa (CiSA), was titled ‘Powering Progress through Chess’.
Thirty teams from secondary schools across Lagos and participants from the Chess in Slums initiative participated in the tournament.
The grand finale of the tournament was graced by the founder of Chess In Slums Africa, Guinness Book of World Record holder, Tunde Onakoya, and also the Vice-President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Prince Adewole Adeyinka.
Nyuma Ferdinand, Adeksnye Adejwon, Obe Amir, Taiwo Olamide, and Taiwo Ibrahim delivered impressive performances to lead the Platform Schools, Ipaja to the first position with a cash prize of ₦500,000.
Shasha Community Junior and Secondary School won the second place position with a cash prize of ₦300,000, while Imperious Dominion Academy, and Abiolu School, Igando both finished as the third-placed teams, they were rewarded with a cash prize of ₦100,000 each.
Luke Miracle of Shasha Community High School was awarded the Best Performing Male Prize, while Ogbonna Confidence of the Chess In Slums Africa scooped the Best Performing Female Prize.
The Director of Platform Schools, Dr. Bola Obe was full of praise for the students, who shone brightly for the school in the tournament, while also attributing the victory to the school’s foundation of academic excellence.
“Our students have consistently demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving a success rate of over 95 per cent in national and international exams.
Beyond academics, Platform Schools have earned recognition in several extracurricular competitions. The institution’s spelling bee participants have ranked among the top, with multiple students winning awards at both national and international levels. The school’s science olympiad teams have also garnered medals and awards in various categories.
