Nigeria Wins 8th African Arm Wrestling Championship

Nigeria has emerged the overall champion of the 8th African Arm Wrestling Championship held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Competing with 29 fighters, Nigeria won the tournament with 19 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Ghana came second with 10 gold, while Mali took the third place with 8 gold medals just as Mali settled for the third position with eight gold, four silver and a bronze medal.

President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAF), Olatunji Jackson, said he was happy with the team’s brilliant performance in the championship, adding that the victory was an attestation that the sport was developing at a fast pace in the country.

According to Olatunji Jackson:

“I am happy and delighted with the outcome of this competition, the athletes did the country proud with their performance.

The sport is growing and developing fast than I expected and I know this win is the beginning of greater things to come as far as armwrestling is concerned.”

Head coach of the team, Femi Akinsanya said the team deserved the victory owing the amount of effort put in while preparing for the competition.

Akinsanya appealed for government and private sector’s support to move the sport forward.

Ghana, Mali, Egypt, Cameroun and host Nigeria participated in the 8th African Arm Wrestling Championship, which began on June 29 – July 02, 2017.
