House Of Wisdom Sermons 4: The Holy Spirit And You By Apostle Olumide Jayeola (AACC)
Jesus, close to the end of His earthly ministry, said to his disciples:
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. [8] And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:7-8).
At this point, imagine being a disciple of Jesus as someone who has sacrificed all to follow Him. Wherever He goes, you go. You listen to His every word (even when you don’t understand it all!). You have seen things that have defied the laws of medicine and physics. You have heard and seen demonstration of power and wisdom (1 Cor. 1:24) that no one has ever done before. As far as you are concerned He has become your “all in all”, your very life. And then He starts saying that He will soon be leaving and where He is going, you can’t come… well, not yet anyway. That would be devastating would it not?
Imagine the confusion. Imagine the panic arising in your heart. He is going to go? But He is the King! But then He tells you that it is to your advantage that He is going away!
What!? How could the Savior abandoning you be of any advantage?
Well, because there is another that will come and be with you. Not only that, but this One, called the Helper, will be with you for all time. And what’s more? He is not limited to being in one place or with one person either. Hmmm… The Helper? Now that is someone we all need!
The Helper
The Bible says, “When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.” (Isa 59:19 NKJV) One of the great blessings of difficulties and persecution is the fellowship of the Spirit. God has always been my Helper. Whether it is speaking a scripture to my heart, encouraging me through another person, maybe through healing, unexpected provisions or supplying the power to endure and overcome… the Spirit responds to trying times. And we will need His fruit, strength and help more than ever should the Lord tarries in His coming… That is why He is the Helper!
Rather than trying to be religious, desire the Holy Spirit.
Major Ian Thomas once said:
“There are a few things quite so boring as being religious, but there is nothing quite so exciting as being a Christian! Most folks have never discovered the difference between the one and the other, so that there are those who sincerely try to live a life they do not have, substituting religion for God, Christianity for Christ, and their own noble endeavors for the energy, joy, and power of the Holy Spirit. In the absence of reality, they can only grasp at ritual, stubbornly defending the latter in the absence of the former, lest they be found with neither! They are lamps without oil, cars without gas, and pens without ink, baffled at their own impotence in the absence of all that alone can make man functional; for man was so engineered by God that the presence of the Creator within the creature is indispensable to his humanity. Christ gave Himself for us to give Himself to us! His presence puts God back into the man! He came that we might have life – God’s life!”
What does it mean that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment?
In this verse (John 16:8), we see a three-fold ministry the Spirit will perform in relation to the unsaved world. He will “convict” the world; that is, He will reprove it or show it to be wrong. This reproof will target three areas in which the world needs admonishing: sin, righteousness, and judgment.
Jesus went on to explain: “Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged” (John 16:9–11, ESV).
The world is a sinful place, and one of the Holy Spirit’s tasks is to convict the world of its sin. No amount of preaching, pleading, or pointing of fingers will bring about the conviction of sin, unless the Holy Spirit is at work in the sinner’s heart. It is the Spirit’s job to convict. And what is the most basic sin of which the world is guilty? Jesus specifies it as unbelief. The convicting power of the Holy Spirit is at work in the world “because they believe not in [Christ].” Once a person responds to the Spirit’s conviction and turns to faith in Christ, the other sins he practiced will be taken care of. It is the sin of unbelief — a refusal to trust in Jesus — that is primary.
The world must also be convicted of righteousness, and this too, is something the Holy Spirit does. There is a righteous standard we are all held to, despite the world’s stubborn denial of absolute truth. And who is the standard-bearer of righteousness? Jesus points to Himself as that standard: “Because I go to the Father.” There is only one Person who came down from heaven, lived a life of sinless perfection, and who ascended back to heaven — the Son of Man, who lives to be our Intercessor (John 3:13; 1 Timothy 2:5). The righteousness that the world tries to deny is found demonstrated in Christ. Everything He ever said and did was the consummate expression of God the Father (John 8:28; Colossians 2:9). He is righteousness personified, and none can measure up to Him (Romans 3:23).
The world is facing judgment, and the Holy Spirit also convicts them of this truth. There is a day of reckoning scheduled — a day in which the holy God will mete out justice and rid His creation of sin. In fact, this judgment has already begun. With whom did it begin? Jesus identifies Satan as the one on whom judgment fell: “Because the ruler of this world is cast out.” Jesus had earlier indicated that His death on the cross was when “the prince of this world will be driven out” (John 12:31). It was on the cross that Jesus redeemed sinners for God and utterly vanquished Satan. “That by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14). Three days later Jesus rose from the dead, showing to all the world that Satan’s rule has been overthrown. All who reject Christ and remain in their sin will be condemned along with Satan, and this is the warning that the Holy Spirit sounds in the hearts of the unsaved.
The influence of the Holy Spirit in an unsaved person’s life will lead that person to the realization that he is guilty, that God is just, and that all sinners are deserving of judgment. Once a sinner has been awakened to his soul’s great need, the Spirit will point him to Christ, the one and only Saviour and Refuge from judgment (John 16:14). In all of this, the Spirit uses His “sword,” the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17), and the result is a regenerated heart. “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word about Christ.” (Romans 10:17).
The Seven Spirits of God – The fullness of the Spirit
Starting with a description of the Holy Spirit given in the book of Revelation, in it John writes:
John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before His throne (Rev. 1:4).
“From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God” – Rev. 4:5
We see from these two chapters that before the throne are the seven spirits of God, visually seen as seven burning lamps. Now that is interesting. The Holy Spirit is obviously one Spirit, but also seen here as seven. Why is that? We know from the book of Revelation that the number seven is prominent and critical. In Bible numerology (the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events), seven speaks of completeness or divine perfection. It is God’s perfect number.
Holy Spirit is seen in all His perfection, as shown by the number seven. We should also note from Rev 4:5 that John saw the Spirit as seven lamps that were burning before the throne. This is a clear reference to what God was illustrating way back in the tabernacle built by Moses. In it lay the golden lampstand in the Holy Place with its seven lamps (Ex. 25:31,37).
As we read on in Revelation, we note something else. Not only are the seven Spirits of God before the throne in Heaven but they are upon someone… and they are also sent out into all the earth:
Rev 3:1 – “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars…”
Rev 5:6 – “Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.”
Jesus on the earth in the person of the Holy Spirit
Yes! The Lamb that looked as if it had been slain was standing in the midst of the throne and He (Jesus) has the seven Spirits of God. Not only that, but these seven Spirits have been sent out into all the earth. The Lamb had seven horns (omnipotence) and seven eyes (omniscience). His possession of the seven Spirits of God reminds us that the Lord Jesus was endued with the full measure of the Holy Spirit (John 3:34). The seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth suggest omnipresence. So the Lord Jesus has and had the seven Spirits of God upon Him.
The seven Spirit of God in the Old Testament
Prophet Isaiah had long predicted: “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD, and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist (Isaiah 11:1-5).
In this wonderful passage, Isaiah spoke of One who was coming that would totally possess without measure the seven-fold Spirit. This One, the Messiah, would come from the line of Jesse.
ISAIAH’S ACCOUNT OF THE 7-FOLD SPIRIT UPON JESUS
- The Spirit of the LORD
LORD here is YHWH, commonly pronounced as Yahweh. It was the Spirit of Yahweh that rested upon Jesus. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matt 1:18, 20) and was empowered to live as the perfect human through that same Spirit (Luke 3:22, Luke 4:1, 14, 18). This is the central part of the Jewish Menorah candlestick out of which all else proceeds.
2. The Spirit of wisdom
Even from a child Jesus was filled with the Spirit of wisdom. Luke 2:40 – And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. His wisdom was greater than that of Solomon (Matt 12:42) and often left people asking “What manner of wisdom is this?” That is, where did He get such wisdom from (Matt 13:54) while others were simply left speechless at His answers! (Matt 22:22, 33, 46)
Truly, as Paul expressed in Colossians 2:2-3, in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
3. The Spirit of understanding
Jesus, through the Spirit upon Him, understood all things. He understood all men. He even knew and understood their thoughts before they were expressed (Mark 2:8, John 2:24) As Hebrews tells us, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.
Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Heb. 4:13)
4. The Spirit of counsel
Having the Spirit of wisdom and the Spirit of understanding made Jesus the perfect counselor! Pro 19:21 – Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the LORD will stand. Thus, there was never a time when Jesus was left speechless or unable to answer. Even the attempts of men to confound Him fell laughably short! Isaiah 50:4 – The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as a Learned. The only time Jesus asked people questions was to test what they knew or get them to think. It was never because He needed to be instructed or counseled!
5. The Spirit of power
The Spirit’s power was upon Jesus mightily. Power to heal, power to raise the dead. It was the power to resist all satanic temptations and the power to always do the will of God. Imagine the power that was upon Him, though dying on the cross at the hands of wicked men that enabled Him to say “Father forgive them for they know not what they do!” While being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously – That is power!
6. The Spirit of knowledge
This is not just general knowledge but the specific knowledge of God. Jesus often said to the Jews that He knew the Father and they knew Him not. John 8:54-55 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word.” And this is the essence Jesus said of eternal life: John 17:3 – “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” This is what life is all about. Not just knowing things, but knowing Him! And the Spirit of the Lord has been given so that we may know Him! (1 Cor. 2:10-16)
7. The Spirit of the fear of the LORD
This is tied in with the previous Spirit of Knowledge. It is to know Him but also to place Him in His rightful first position in your life. That is what the fear of the Lord is. It was upon Jesus for He always desired to put the will of God first. He held no fear of man but always honored His Father.
Seven Spirits of God in the New Testament
So we have looked at Revelation and seen that the Holy Spirit is pictured as the seven Spirits of God. We’ve seen how that seven-fold Spirit was upon Jesus as prophesied in Isaiah. Well this got me thinking about how the Holy Spirit is presented in the New Testament. We’ll begin by considering how many references there are in the New Testament to the Holy Spirit of God. Let us consider verses that describe an attribute of the Spirit. If we can find Seven, then, that’ll be it.
- The Spirit of Truth – But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come – John 16:13
- The Spirit of Holiness – and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. – Rom 1:4
- The Spirit of Life – because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death – Romans 8:2
- The Spirit of Adoption (or Sonship) – For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, ” – Romans 8:15
- The Spirit of Wisdom – I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better – Ephesians 1:17
- The Spirit of Grace – How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under .. who has insulted the Spirit of grace? – Hebrews 10:29
- The Spirit of Glory – If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you – 1 Peter 4:14
You will note in the progression above that it begins with truth and ends with glory. And so does the journey of the believer with the same Spirit guiding each step of the way. The Spirit of truth comes to guide us into truth that begins with the truth of who you are, who Jesus is, and your need for Him. Once believed and accepted, this leads to sonship, life and holiness. Along the journey you will also continually learn about wisdom and grace (both probably through mistakes and dealings!) – all from the same Spirit. But note again how it ends. It ends in glory. For every believer it ends in glory. In fact those last two of the Spirit of grace and glory are inseparably linked: “…the Lord will give grace and glory” (Psalm 84:11).
Glory never comes without grace coming first, but grace never comes without glory coming last; the two are bound together, and “what God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” ~ Charles Spurgeon
So here are some simple points/questions to consider and take away based on what we have seen so far concerning the Holy Spirit. They are connected to need, our response, our blockages and our hope.
Our need: If the Lord Jesus needed the seven-fold Spirit how much more do we? Even though Jesus was born without a sinful nature, He still had to rely completely upon the Holy Spirit and His Father in His ministry and life. Again, how much more do we, those born with a fallen nature in a fallen world, need this Helper? Why is it that we fail? Is it related to the fact that we think that we can manage by ourselves? Charles Spurgeon describes it thus: “Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without the wind, branches without sap, and like coals without fire, we are useless.”
Our response: Have you learned to thank the Lord, in whatever situation arrives, for giving you His Spirit who is able in all things? Have you learned to thank the Lord for the Spirit of truth who desires to bring you into all truth? Have you thanked Him for the Spirit of Life or wisdom… or grace… all the essentials that the Spirit is? Often we think and act like we are down here, God is in Heaven and we have to ask for a dose of strength or courage or whatever it is we need. We forget to thank the Lord for the gift of the Helper – the One who is with us till the end of the age and beyond. If we truly see what God has given us there would be less pleading and more thanking.
Our blockages: Take a bit of time to consider if there is anything currently hindering you from experiencing the work of the Spirit in your life more? As we move forward in this teaching we shall see that the Holy Spirit is gentle, likened to a dove, and can be grieved by our actions. The fire of the Holy Spirit can be quenched by our actions or inactions. So be mindful of potential blockages, taking time to listen to the small still voice of God.
Our hope: According to Eph. 1:13-14 we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit who is a deposit, guaranteeing our inheritance and the full redemption of God’s possession. If you have experienced something of His grace, life & holiness already… remember that this is but a deposit. There is a full inheritance still to come! Have you considered how wonderful it will be on that day when you are with Him and there is no restriction to the fullness of the presence of the Holy Spirit?
Conclusion
So what have we seen in Holy Spirit and Us?
Well we’ve seen that the Holy Spirit is pictured as a 7-fold Spirit. John in the book of Revelation saw the Spirit as seven lamps that were burning before the throne. They were also upon the Lamb of God and have been sent out throughout the earth. We’ve seen that this was also pictured in the Jewish Menorah, the seven-fold candlestick that was in the tabernacle and temple of God. This same seven-fold Spirit was prophesied about in the book of Isaiah as being upon the coming Messiah. Finally, we have seen that there are seven descriptions of the Spirit’s attribute in the New Testament. We first encounter the Spirit as the Spirit of truth. But as we move through our journey we experience Him as the Spirit of holiness, sonship, wisdom, life and grace. And it ends well! It ends when we stand in glory and fully experience Him as the Spirit of glory. And that is where all things are heading!
But also remember the application for the here and now too. Do you see your need of the Helper? Do you see anything that might be blocking Him from helping you? Are you taking time to develop your relationship with the Helper?
Now the disciples did not understand this at all. “It is to your advantage that I go away?” I don’t think so! Jesus could just have easily said it is to your advantage that I go to the cross and die. And they would not have seen that either. It just would have made zero sense. And yet it was… for all of us. Often, we don’t get what God is doing. He is so far above our thought and imagination! How far do the eyes of God see? He sees things that are for our advantage for all eternity, even though they seem strange and bring initial pain or difficulty to us in the short term. And yet, they are for our advantage. Always remember this, especially in the confusing times.
Also note the phrase “finger of God” is used to symbolize the power and might of God and is commonly interpreted by scholars as a sign of His divine intervention and the manifestation of His will. In the New Testament, it is also used metaphorically in reference to the Spirit of God (Luke 11:20).
Just as God’s finger cast out demons and etched His law onto stone tablets, the Holy Spirit empowers and inscribes divine truths within us. It is a reminder of the Spirit’s presence, guiding, transforming, and revealing God’s truths. This symbol captures the essence of the Holy Spirit as a driving force of change and divine connection, both in ancient times and in our modern faith journey.
Finally, have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?
Apostle Paul in Acts 19:2 raised this question with the 12 new disciples in Ephesus, that he may know where to begin their discipleship from. Their ignorance of the Holy Spirit makes it important for me to add the following without which this article will be incomplete.
Signs of the Holy Spirit in You
God sent His Spirit to transform our hearts and make us more Christ-like. He knew that we needed help in living a righteous life that pleases Him. Without God’s help, we are unable to live the kind of life that God desires for us to have. As believers of Jesus Christ, we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in us.
Presence of the Holy Spirit
“…the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” – John 14:17
Since the Holy Spirit lives in us, our lives should show signs that He lives in us and is actively at work in our hearts.
- Transformation
The Holy Spirit works in us and helps us mature as believers, and brings about the transformation of our hearts and minds. “But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” – Titus 3:4-6
Having the Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit, and we become a new creation. We undergo a complete transformation at the spirit level and this causes our behavior to change. The world believes in improving yourself and becoming a better person, but the Holy Spirit turns you into a completely new being. When you are transformed, others notice the change in you. That is why when someone gets saved, others can see a difference in them, though they may not know what caused the change. A person with the Holy Spirit in them, will be like a new person. We are always looking for how to become better people, but God wants us to be totally new people who reflect His glory.
- Growing in the Fruit of the Spirit
One sign that you have received the Holy Spirit is the presence of the fruit of the Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22-23
The more time we spend with God, we grow in love, joy, peace, and the other fruit listed in this Scripture. When you see someone grow in the fruit of the Spirit, then you know that they have allowed God to work in their hearts. The journey of salvation is lifelong, and it takes time for the fruit to fully manifest in our lives. Sometimes you will find that you are not as joyful or kind as you should be, and you can pray and ask God to help you. Growth takes time, and you can be patient with yourself as you grow in the fruit of the Spirit. When you have the fruit of the Spirit manifesting in you, you will notice that you do not act the way you do before you got saved.
If your joy and happiness came from outside sources, it now comes from the inside. Whenever you want to check whether you are growing in the fruit of the Spirit, you can go through each of them and ask yourself if you are manifesting them in your life.
- The Leading of the Holy Spirit
With the Holy Spirit living in us, we can follow His leading as we go about our daily lives.
Signs of the Holy Spirit’s presence are found in a person who will talk about how God is speaking to them and giving them direction or instructions for every step they take. God wants us to follow the voice of His Spirit.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” – Romans 8:14
When a believer is led by the Holy Spirit, they will obey God’s Word, and go in the direction that He wants them to go. God speaks to us in our hearts and shows us the way we are to go. When you don’t know what to do in a given situation, you can ask the Holy Spirit and He will give you the solution. You will make fewer mistakes in life when you make it a habit to listen to what God wants you to do.
Many times we want to know the will of God for our lives and the only way we can is by listening to His Spirit. We can commit to obeying the things that God wants us to do in life so that we can live a righteous life that honors Him. During our quiet moments, we can hear the Holy Spirit speak to us and tell us what is in His heart. We can make decisions that lead to life when we make them with God as our source of wisdom and discernment.
- Speaking in Tongues
Signs of being filled with the Holy Spirit is the evidence of speaking in tongues. After salvation, a believer can be baptized in the Holy Spirit and they will speak in tongues.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” – Acts 2:4
When Jesus had returned to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit who in-filled those who were praying in the upper room. They began to speak in tongues as evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said that those who believe in Him will speak in new tongues. “And these signs will follow those who believe: “In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues” – Mark 16:17
As believers, we can speak in tongues when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, not speaking in tongues does not mean that a person is not saved or possess the Holy Spirit, they are, only that they have not activated the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- Testing the Spirits
Sign for Holy Spirit is in a person who professes Christ is that they are not easily moved by winds of doctrines. They test the spirits by which people speak and act, and turn to the word of God to confirm the truth.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1
One with the Holy Spirit in them will quickly discern false prophets and teachers. They are convicted when they hear teachings that sound spiritual but are not from God. They have learned to confirm what they hear with the Word of God.
The only way to know the truth is to read and meditate on the Bible and understand God’s commands. This is how you guard yourself against deception and hold on to the truth. When you see others falling away from the faith, it is likely that they believed a lie about God and His Word. If we are going to hold on to our faith, we need to have the truth in our hearts always.
The above are only five signs of presence of Holy Spirit in a person. You can ask God to show you more as you have your quiet time with Him.
To always be filled with the Holy Spirit, you must give Him more room in your heart so that He can do a great work in you. God accomplishes His work on earth through the Holy Spirit and also renews our hearts through the same Spirit. Allow the Holy Spirit to help you become godlier and live a righteous life.
