Emeka Okpara has emerged ‘Supreme African Film Director of the Year’ for ‘The Visit’ at the 3rd edition of the Supreme Dynamic Talent Academy (SDTA) Awards Gala 2023.
Mr. Emeka Okpara won the award amidst stiff competition from African film industry heavyweights such as Pascal Amanfo (God is African), Ben Cassie (Bonus Family), Eddie Nartey (Saving Chris), Frank Rajah (Taste of Sin), Kobi Rana (Freedom and Justice), Chidox (Money Over Love), Sunshine (Agony in Love), Benjamin Sarpong (Galamsay) and others.
The film director category is one of the most diverse slates of nominees in terms of gender and nationality within the African film industry.
In his acceptance speech via his Instagram page for the award, Mr. Emeka Okpara said:
“I wasn’t expecting to win in this category kraa (Supreme African film director of the year 2023) but God did it. A big thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for me, Thank you @sdta_awards , i will be back next year.”
Hon. Zino Lexili Ogazi – SDTA awards Chairperson said Emeka Okpara won the category for his impressive work and meaningful efforts and contributions to the film industry and congratulated him for the award.
The SDTA Awards third edition ceremony took place on the 20th of December 2023 at the plush La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra-Ghana.
Supreme Film Director of the year award
This SDTA awards category is awarded to a Film Director, who has made supreme achievements in film and television and who has evinced supremacy in cinematic direction in the film industry.
A director whose visual talent and storytelling skills, as well as the visual elements used, such as the set design, the location, wardrobe, the shot composition, lighting, casting and remaining film-related aspects has distinguished him/ her over the last 12 months, dominated the industry and made an impact within the African continent or globally and portrayed supremacy.
The director will receive accolades for achievements in feature film, television, documentaries and TV shows.
Emeka Okpara
Emeka Okpara is a Nigerian creative film television director and a film producer, based primarily in Ghana, working in the Ghana film industry.
Emeka Okpara attended a film school in Ghana where he studied filmmaking and aesthetics with a major in film producing and directing.
After graduation, he worked for some production houses.
Emeka Okpara’s career in filmmaking began in 2010 when he co-directed a film titled “Equatorial Escape”, which made a lot of sales in the market, during the VCD era in opera Square.
He further directed one of the best television series “Twisted Tips”, which was shown on viasat 1 TV in 2011.
Emeka Okpara is passionate about creating premium African contents and telling African stories at its finest with a global appeal.
For instance, in 2018, he produced one of the best films in Ghana cinema; titled “Sometimes in Yesterday”, Emeka won best producer and the film won Best West African film at the 2018 Uganda film festival.
Some of his other Accolades include; Best film producer at Nollywood African film festival UK in 2019 and other awards in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and UK.
Emeka Okpara also recently won the “Supreme African film director of the year 2023.”
