Nigeria Qualifies For First Under-19 Cricket World Cup

Nigeria’s under-19 Cricket Team, the “Junior Yellow Green”, on the 23rd of March 2019 booked the country’s first ever spot at the Cricket World Cup.

They achieved this feat after topping the week-long qualifying series that was concluded in Windhoek, Namibia. The team defeated Sierra Leone with two wickets on the final day of the Africa qualifying tournament.

Tanitoluwa Adewumi Wins New York State Chess Championship [2019]

Tanitoluwa Adewumi has emerged the winner of the state-wide New York’s chess championship in the third-grade category (kindergarten through third grade)  with over a year of learning.

He won the competition with an undefeated performance.

Prior to becoming the champion, Tanitoluwa Adewumi won seven trophies, which stay by his bed as he aims to be the youngest grandmaster. This title is currently held by Sergey Karjakin Ukraine, a chess prodigy who qualified for the title at the age of 12 years and 7 months.

Basheer Salisu Named First Female Nigerian Referee At The 2019 U-17 AFCON

A Nigerian female referee, Basheer Salisu has been named among three other female referees to officiate for the first time at a men’s football competition – the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (U-17 AFCON) in Tanzania.

The trio of Jonesia Rukyaa Kabakana who hails from Tanzania, Kenya’s Mary Wanjiru Njoroge and Lidwine Rakotozafinoro from Madagascar were among the 29-match officials listed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the 2019 U-17 AFCON.

Basheer Salisu is the only Nigerian referee on the list for the competition.

Oduduru Divine Sets New Records At 2019 Big 12 Indoor Championship

Oduduru Divine of Texas Tech school has won the 60 meters and 200 meters races at the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Championship in Lubbock, Texas.

Oduduru Divine won the 60 meters title for the first time ever at the Big 12 Championships with a Personal Best (PB) and School Record time of 6.52 seconds.

The 22-year-old Nigerian now holds Texas Tech’s 60 meters record.

Team Nigeria Win 2019 Nigeria Taekwondo Open

Team Nigeria has emerged the overall best team of the 2019 Nigeria Taekwondo Open held at the Abuja National Stadium, Abuja.

Nigeria emerged in first position with 9 gold and 1 bronze medal – a total of 10 medals, Team Benin Republic came second with 1 gold and 1 silver, while Team Saudi Arabia and Taraba state won 1 gold and 1 silver to finish third and fourth place respectively at the end of the three-day championship.
