Five Africans Win Inaugural JJI Champions of Science – Africa Storytelling Challenge

Johnson & Johnson Innovation has announced five winners of the first Champions of Science – Africa Storytelling Challenge.

The Champions of Science – Africa Storytelling Challenge is aimed at highlighting the journeys of scientists and innovators working in Africa, and celebrate the impact of their work on families, communities and the world.

The Challenge received more than 100 entries from scientists and innovators in 22 African nations, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda, among others.

Joseph Adewole Wins micro:bit Global Challenge 2018 [Africa]

Joseph Adewole of Nigeria has emerged winner of micro:bit Global Challenge 2018 for the African region.

Joseph Adewole designed a system that detects the temperature of students in a class and lets their teacher know. He designed the device so that students can be treated quickly if they are ill and therefore don’t miss too much school.

Joseph Adewole made his contribution on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being.

Winners have emerged at the 2019 Go Global Africa Programme hosted by the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, Nigeria.

The winning Nigerian entrepreneurs are:

  • RemindMe, an app by Innovation corner that would use USSD and text to remind new mothers of vaccination dates;
  • Piggybank, an automates savings and investment solution;
  • Social Lender; a money lending solution that uses social media platforms;
  • Thriveagric, a program that lowers the entry barrier for people willing to invest in agriculture by connecting farmers to crowdsourced finance;
  • Helium Health; a hospital management software;
  • Helpmum; an app that provides healthcare information to combat maternal and infant mortality;
  • eTrash2Cash; an online platform that will help low income & marginalised women earn & save cash benefits for gathering trash for recycling.

Akachukwu Anumudu Wins 2019 InterswitchSPAK National Science Competition

Akachukwu Anumudu of Apostolic Faith Secondary School, Anthony, Lagos, has emerged winner of the first edition of the InterswitchSPAK National Science Competition held in Lagos.

The 16-year-old on February 9, 2019, beat eight other contestants in an intense quiz session to win the grand prize of 7.5 million worth of tertiary education scholarship spread over five years, a laptop and a monthly stipend during the course of the scholarship.

Three teams emerged winners of the 2018 USPF Changemaker Challenge, out of the 14 teams that were shortlisted for the contest from over 500 applications received.

Team AI Squad Wins FIRST Lego League (FLL) Nigeria National Championship [2019]

Team AI Squad from Hillside School, Abuja has emerged winner of the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Nigeria National Championship [2019] hosted by Baze University, Abuja.

The competition, which hosted 600 pupils of ages nine to 16, had team Federal Government College (FGC), Odogbolu, Ogun State, emerge second place winner, while Team Glistobots, from Glisten International Academy, Abuja, won the third place.

The top three teams will represent Nigeria at international tournaments including the World robotic festival at Houston, Texas and International Open Championships in Turkey, Lebanon, Australia and Uruguay.
