“Mapping Makoko” has emerged winner of the 2021 Sigma Awards (Single Project) – a competition to celebrate the best data journalism in the world.

The organisers received a total of 545 projects from 68 countries this year. 140 made it to the shortlist. 13 won and 7 got citations.

Yusuf Bilesanmi Voted Inaugural Winner Of Africa Prize For Engineering Innovation “One To Watch” Award

Yusuf Bilesanmi has been voted as the inaugural winner of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation “One To Watch” award.

Yusuf was one of the twelve (12) innovators who pitched their innovations to a live audience who voted his – ShiVent – as one that showed promise and potential for impact. He also received a £5,000 prize.

ShiVent is a low-cost, non-electric and non-invasive ventilator for patients with respiratory difficulties, available at a fraction of the cost of mechanical ventilators. Its simple design enables it to be operated by unspecialised healthcare workers.

ShiVent is designed for under-resourced clinics with unreliable electricity supply and limited access to specialist knowledge.

Team DC Solar Element Stove Wins Inaugural Nigerian Content Science And Technology Innovation Challenge (STIC)

Team DC Solar Element Stove has emerged winner of the inaugural Nigerian Content Science and Technology Innovation Challenge (STIC).

Team DC Solar Element Stove represented by Victoria Effiong and Paul Agbor of Cross River University of Technology, (CRUTECH), produced a solar element stove to be used for renewable and cheaper alternative cooking.

For the feat, Team DC Solar receives the grand prize of ₦10 million.

Team Quester of the University of Jos, came second with a Hydroponic system of growing food indoors without soil and received ₦4 million while Team Ted of the Federal University, Makurdi came third with a noiseless, fuel-less electric generator to provide alternate power source, and went home with ₦1.5 million.

Queen College Lagos Win 2020/2021 LEGO League Challenge [National]

Queen College Lagos has emerged overall winner of the national 2020/2021 LEGO League Challenge by creating an App called Access, which gets people active by connecting people interested in the same sports.

Queen College Lagos, a new entrant to the program and all-girls school won the competition, which had participation of about 1,320 students from the 132 teams including student from all 104 Unity School in Nigeria, in total who were among the over 500,000 children around the world who participated in the 2020/2021 LEGO League Challenge.

Federal Science and Technology College, Orozo, came second, while Team AIROL, an all-girls team from University of Lagos AI Lab, came third.

The three teams will represent Nigeria at the International Open Championship in Greece.

Indigenous Labs Wins 2021 Abuja Tech Friday Hackathon

Indigenous Labs have emerged first place winner of the 2021 Abuja Tech Friday Hackathon organised by Art Tech District (ATD) in collaboration with the Civic Innovation Lab (Civicilab).

This hackathon is an opportunity for Developers, Tech Startups, Tech enthusiasts and Undergraduates (in Universities across Nigeria) to propose and build software solutions to determine the best way to walk through museum exhibitions using AR (Augmented Reality) or VR (Virtual Reality) or a Web Application, with the aim of synchronizing Nigerian Art and History with digital solutions.

The maiden edition of the Abuja Tech Friday is a series of hackathons to create a platform for “Using Technology To Tell Nigerian History” and will be called the MUSEUMHACK.

Indigenous Labs – proud lovers of culture whose solution enabled uploads, updates, and registration processes; a full system in one. Their solution leverages on providing traction and no-contact experiences which enables navigation in, around and out of the museum-freely, truly built for times like this. They also demonstrated how museums can become the go-to for teaching kids history and empowering institutions. The fact that these things can be achieved using web links and not an application was another factor that distinguished this team of two.

Indigenous Labs receive the grand prize of ₦500,000 seed fund for further development of the solution.
