UNIJOS Produces First Plant-based Anti-snake Venom Vaccine (COVIP-plus)

The African Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD), University of Jos (UniJos), in collaboration with the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, (NOTAP) has produced the world first plant-based anti-snake venom vaccine called COVIP-plus.

The new vaccine was unveiled at a national forum on promotion of Anti-Snake Venom (COVIP-Plus) for commercialisation organised by NOTAP and ACEPRD, on the 17th of July 2019 in Abuja.

Ego Eunice Mgbahurike Becomes First Nigerian To Obtain A PhD In Pharmacognosy At University Of Helsinki, Finland

Ego Eunice Mgbahurike has emerged the first Nigerian [woman] to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Pharmacognosy at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Pharmacognosy is the study of plants or other natural sources as a possible source of drugs.

EMADET Wins 2019 UNDP Equator Award

Environmental Management and Development Trust (EMADET) Nigeria has emerged one of the 22 winners of the 2019 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Equator Prize.

The prize is part of the events marking the World Environment Day with the winning organisations showcasing innovative, nature-based solutions for tackling climate change, environment, and poverty challenges.

Aniekeme Uwah Awarded AU Medal Of Honour

The African Union (AU) has conferred a medal of honour on Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, for his role in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia.

The AU head of mission in Nigeria, Joshua Obasanya, presented the medal to Dr. Uwah in Abuja, May 24, 2019.

Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, an epidemiologist, works in the ministry of health in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

He was among a few doctors with a requisite knowledge in public health and epidemiology recruited as volunteers by the AU in 2014 to help in the containment of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Dr. Uwah spent six months in Liberia.

Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Performs First Translabyrinthine Brain Surgery

The Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) has performed undertook its first surgery to remove brain tumour using a machine that drills the skull bone to gain access to the tumour.

The brain operation involving tumour had been in the patient (a woman) for three years before the surgery was done by a combined effort of neurosurgeons, Ear-Nose-Throats (ENT), surgeons and the Anaesthetists.

Chibawanye Ene Wins 2019 Ronald L. Bittner Award On Brain Tumor Research

37-year-old Chibawanye Ene has won the 2019 Ronald L. Bittner Award on brain tumor research.

According to the Applied Radiation Oncology, a quarterly journal on cancer, Chibawanye Ene received the award at the 2019 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) annual scientific meeting, which held from April 13 to April 17 [2019] in San Diego, USA.

Chibawanye Ene won the award with his research work titled: “Anti-PD-L1 Immunotherapy Enhances Radiation-induced Abscopal Response in Glioblastoma”.
