The Power Of The Nigerian Self-Esteem! By Felix Emmanuel

Good afternoon my viewers. My name is Felix Emmanuel. I am a Nigerian. For the next few minutes, I will be talking about the power of the Nigerian self esteem. Self esteem is simply one’s view of one self. It can be high in which case one sees oneself as adequate or sufficient to pursue any goal or purpose in life, or it can be negative in which case, the person feels negative about life and feels that he or she is inadequate to pursue goals and purpose in life. Self esteem plays a vital role in individualistic and societal well-being and progress. Despite the importance of self-esteem, there are disturbing facts and figures about global read of self-esteem. According to Dr. Joe Rubino, the creator of the popular self-esteem system, 85% of the world population suffers from self-esteem deficit but when one looks at Nigeria, the records are a little different. According to the World Happiness Rating in 2017, as reported by The Guardian online newspaper platform of 29th March 2017, Nigeria is rated the 95th happiest country of the world, but it’s not as though Nigeria is one of the best countries in the world. But what is actually contributing to the way which despite our challenges are still delightful about ourselves and progressive in our different engagements? It’s simply like the Afrobeat musician Fela said: “we are suffering and smiling.”

Why?

Sometimes it gets so dark one can hardly imagine the possibility of stars being suspended in the skies. Still, that doesn’t null the fact that somewhere beneath the depressing curtain of darkness, the stars do exist. When I first saw the theme for this contest, I was torn between disbelief and worry. Here was a contest that did not require me to give solutions to the spate of insecurity in the country or wipe out poverty with a flourish of my pen. Here was a contest that needed me instead to put the spotlight on the other Nigerian realities that have been cowering beneath more aggressive realities. It was like I was being asked to harvest apples from a Briar bush. Then I remembered this young barrow pusher I met at Ogbete market in Enugu, who was patient and helpful when I was confused and took the trouble to carry my heavy goods beyond the agreed point to the park, at no extra costs. I also remembered the good lady I met in Aba, who despite my foreignness let me take shelter in her shop and was instrumental in helping me direct my uncle to where he was to pick me. I remembered these people who didn’t have much but were willing to give the little they had to a stranger and I realized that though much had been lost in Nigeria, our ability to love as a people still thrived.

Nigeria; home to over 190 million people, 250 ethnic groups and twice as many languages, is by far the most populated African nation. Naturally the diversity should engender disparity amongst Nigerians, but the reverse is the case as Nigerians have proved that truly there can be unity in diversity. In most big cities in Nigeria it is common to find people from all over the nation and even foreigners present and living together with no form of discrimination. This is perhaps more alarming considering the fact that Nigeria is going through what some would call a dark age, characterized by; a dwindling economy, genocides, increased mortality, rising crime rate, fraudulent activities and many more unfavorable realities. In the midst of the chaos, corruption and poverty, Nigerians have shown time and again that they are indeed a hospitable, patient and well meaning people. Even the somewhat lax security in the nation hasn’t been able to stop the arrival of tourists and foreigners. What then is it that makes Nigeria welcoming? What is it that attracts many to this great nation? Surely, it is not the tourist attractions or employment opportunities, neither is it the standard of living in the nation, because many countries surpass Nigeria in these aspects. Then, it must be the people. What is it about Nigerians that makes them different? What genuinely makes Nigerians kind and cooperative? What makes Nigerians tolerant and well-meaning towards one another and humanity today?

Very few countries are culturally and ethno-religiously as diverse as Nigeria. With over 190 million people divided across more than 250 ethnic groups, over 520 languages, and several religious beliefs and sects, the country is an exemplary sample of a multifarious nation. This is the complexity that many people perhaps fail to comprehend and put into writing.

In spite of the supposed differences still, volksgeist, the ‘spirit’ of the people is not lacking. One may see this diversity in many Nigerian families. A typical Nigerian family could have the parents from distinct ethnic group and separate religious beliefs – with the children, a blend of several cultures, choosing to go with either religion of their parents at their will.

Generally, Nigerians are kind, cooperative, tolerant and well-meaning towards one another and to the rest of humanity. Maybe not all of us but many of us are. This fact may however be blurred and continues to be undermined by recurring problems confronting us as a nation. For instance, now in our 58th year post-independence, we still continue to grapple with problems such as gross insecurity, poverty, mass unemployment, corruption and ethnic strife. Even the newspapers often read gory headlines: “120 people slaughtered in Benue”, “Youth, 22, nabbed for armed robbery”, “Naira slumps further to the Dollar in the parallel market”, “Boko Haram bombs church in Maiduguri” and so forth.

I am proud to be Nigerian. I love Nigeria. I love my fatherland. Despite the pessimism bedeviling the nation, prompting some to ask the question, “What is there to love?” My answer to that is, “WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LOVE?”
