Bello Ayomide Emmanuel Wins Nigeria’s First Ever Sailing Gold Medal At The 2019 Open International Canoe Sprint Championship

Bello Ayomide Emmanuel has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at an international Sailing event at the 2019 Open International Canoe Sprint Championship in Bhopal, India.

Bello Ayomide Emmanuel had also won bronze medals in an individual event (C1 500 meters) and two more in the C2 500 meters and C2 200 meters team events, with her partner Amusar Blessing.

Ayomide’s historic feat was achieved on on the 25th of March, 2019 (local time), in the final of the C1 200 meters, where both Nigerian ladies participated.

Thus, in total team Nigeria; comprising of a pair female and male canoeists, won four medals (1 gold, 3 bronze medals).

In a chat with brila.net from Bhopal, head of Nigeria’s contingent and Secretary General of the Canoe, Rowing and Sailing Federation, Olubunmi Oluode Ola described the historic gold as a “big occasion” for the West African country.

According to Olubunmi Oluode Ola:

“We are happy with what the athletes have been able to achieve here in India by doing the country proud.

We want to thank the Federation president and our sponsors for making the trip possible.”

The 2019 Open International Canoe Sprint Championship was held between March 23-25, 2019.
