Miss Nkete Obidimuso of Livingstone College, Lagos State has emerged the first prize winner of the 2018 National ICT Olympiad. She also set a record as the first National Champion of the ICT Olympiad.
The finals was held from 26th- 29th of September, 2018 at Ibadan, Oyo State, with finalists drawn across the Federation.
The National ICT Olympiad was organized “in a bid to discover Nigeria’s best young computer scientists, develop healthy competitive skills as well as improve the youth’s self-esteem together with creating pride in academic achievement.”
According to the National Coordinator of the National ICT Olympiad, over 10,000 students registered for the competition, while about 7000 students participated in the first stage of the competition in over 2,000 secondary schools in across the nation. Only those who scored a minimum of 70% in the first stage qualified for the boot camp (2nd stage).
Nkete Obidimuso led the competition in the first stage with 98% to qualify for the Boot Camp stage (2nd stage). She also emerged as the best student from Lagos zone in the 3rd stage of the competition and represented Lagos State in the National Finals.
Prior to the National finals, students who qualified from the first stage of the competition participated in the boot camp – where they were exposed to web development using HTML 5 and CSS, before taking the second stage of the examination – boot camp examination.
At the National Finals, the finalists were required to select one of the project topics provided by the organizers, to be designed using HTML5, CSS and Adobe Photoshop/Corel Draw.
Nkete’s award winning project was the design and development of a dynamic website for Nigeria Air – the proposed Nigerian government airline. The website showcased the Nigeria Air logo (using Photoshop/Corel Draw) and it contained several webpages with ticket reservation page.
The ICT competition which is the first of its kind in Nigeria is approved by the Lagos State Government and endorsed by Nigeria Computer Society.
