Team Nigeria Emerge Champions Of 2018 Zambia International Badminton Championship

Team Nigeria has emerged champions of the 2018 Zambia International Badminton Championship after winning four medals, comprising two gold and two silver.

The four-day championship held in Lusaka from November 29 – December 2 [2018], saw Dorcas Ajoke Adesokan emerge victorious over Ogar Siamupangila of Zambia 21-17, 21-15 in two straight sets in the women single event to win.

Adesokan also combined well with Anu Opeyori in the Mixed Doubles to defeat Bahaedeen Ahmed and Domou Amro of Jordan 21-18, 23-21.

Azerbaijan finished second overall with 2 gold medals while host, Zambia came third with 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Nigeria’s first silver medal came in the Men’s Singles where Ade Resky Diwicahyo (Azerbaijan) defeated Opeyori 21-10, 23-21. Just as the duo of Ade Resky Diwicahyo and Azmy Qowimuramadhon of Azerbaijan also edged the Nigerians Godwin Olofua and Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori with a score of 21-19, 16-21, 21-17 to win gold medal, with Nigeria winning the silver medal.

President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Mr. Francis Orbih, said the victory at the 2018 Zambia International Badminton Championship has again put Nigeria on a pedestal as a leader in sports.

He further stated that the value to the country and players cannot be underestimated, saying it will stimulate economic activities, job creation and education as players are exposed to new societies as they travel for tournaments.

According to him, the Badminton Federation of Nigeria is committed to ensuring that badminton drives sustainable growth as its contribution to nation building.
