Rivers United Football Club Wins 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Title

Rivers United Football Club have emerged winners of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.

The Port Harcourt-based NPFL side claimed their first-ever league title with four games to spare after Plateau United lost to Akwa United, last season’s champions, in Uyo.

With four games to play, Stanley Eguma’s wards are guaranteed champions courtesy of a 10-point lead over Plateau United, who have three games at hand.

Should Rivers United lose all four remaining games, and the Jos-based side win all of theirs, the new champions would still be ahead by one point.

Rivers United are set to take on Nasarawa United on Sunday in Lafia, the state capital, and a win could extend their lead by 13 points.

By virtue of the league win, Rivers United will represent the country at the CAF Champions League next season.

Plateau United will also feature in the top continental tournament as the runner-up of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Improving on their second-place finish last season, Rivers United occupied the first position on the league table for 26 matchdays and did not relinquish their grip at the top since matchday 14. They are the team with the longest unbeaten run this term (12).

It is the first time Rivers United will win the NPFL title since the Rivers state government was given the approval to merge Dolphins FC and Sharks FC in 2016.

While Sharks never won any league honours since they were founded in 1972, Dolphins lifted the league title three times, with their last coming in 2011.
