Sara Adegoke Wins The 2017 McDan West Africa Open Championship

Sara Adegoke defeated 16 year-old Angel MacLeod 6-4, 6-3 in an all Nigerian affair to win the McDan West Africa Open Championship 2017 held at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court. She wins a $1,000 prize money in addition to silver trophies and products from the supporting sponsors including Twellium Industries, COCOBOD, GNPC and Babolat.

Sara Adegoke becomes the second player to win back-to-back the McDan Open titles equalling Ghanaian player Francisca Nyarko’s record set in 2014 and 2015.

UNIPORT Emerges Winner of NUGA Games 2017

University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has won 150 medals comprising 70 gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze in Judo, Athletics, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Basketball, Scrabble and Tennis to emerge overall winner of the 25th Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games.

The NUGA Games were held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi between April 22 and April 29 with a total of 57 contesting universities.

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria with 16 medals comprising 11 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals followed a distant second while Benson Idahosa University (BIU) came third with 26 medals comprising 10 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze.

University of Lagos (UNILAG) with 20 medals, made up of 9 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze took fourth position.

University of Benin (UNIBEN) was fifth on the medals table while the host institution took the 11th position with 24 medals comprising 2 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals.

2017 NFPAWA Writing Contest Winners

Martin Agbili (an electrical/safety engineer and senior service officer in Anambra State Fire Service) and Jonathan Mairiga have emerged winners in the risk management writing contest put together by the National Fire Prevention Awareness and Advocacy (NFPAWA), a life, fire safety and security risk management organisation, for safety experts.

The novel competition in Nigeria and West Africa is according to NFPAWA, an initiative geared towards developing capacity in security, fire and safety risk management as well as part of programmes line up for the forthcoming risk management conference by the organisation.

‘Nigerian Prince’

Faraday Okoro, a 30-year-old Nigerian-American filmmaker, has been awarded a $1 million grant for his film Nigerian Prince from AT&T in its first program to help emerging filmmakers.

Written and directed by Okoro, the movie will be produced by Biyi Bandele and Oscar Hernandez-Topete with a focus on underrepresented perspectives.

Nigeria Prince will premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.

A New York City based Nigerian-American filmmaker, Faraday Okoro graduated with Distinction from Howard University and has MFA in filmmaking from NYU Film School.

But the money came with pressure: For example, it was to be filmed in Africa.

Tomi Adeyemi’s ‘Children of Blood and Bone’

Tomi Adeyemi, has landed a seven figure book-and-movie deal for her first novel, Children of Blood and Bone, which is described as a “Black Lives Matter-inspired fantasy novel.”

The film rights were purchased by Fox 2000 before the novel was released.

Tomi Adeyemi is a 23 years old Nigerian-American writer and creative writing coach based in San Diego, who graduated from Harvard with a major in English Literature before receiving a fellowship to study West African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil.

Her debut West African YA Fantasy novel is CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE (Holt Books for Young Readers/Macmillan). The CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE movie is in development at Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions with Karen Rosenfelt and Marty Bowen (Twilight, Maze Runner, The Fault In Our Stars) producing it.
